Gains in realty, teck, IT, power, consumer durables, banking and oil & gas stocks helped both the key indices to score gains.
Among the Sensex firms, Sun Pharmaceuticals, Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies, Infosys, Bajaj Finance, Eternal, Tata Consultancy Services, UltraTech Cement, Bajaj Finserv, Tata Steel, ITC and L&T were the major laggards. Asian Paints, Mahindra & Mahindra, BEL, Adani Ports, State Bank of India, Trent, HDFC Bank were among the gainers.
The Sensex finished 38 points higher at 3,640 on Thursday. The Nifty closed with a gain of 12 points at 1,146.
The NSE Nifty closed at 4,575, up 75 points. The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,771 stocks, 1,711 advanced, while 958 declined.
The Sensex staged a smart recovery as it rallied from the day's low of 9897 to a high of 10,093 - up 2% (196 points).

The Sensex opened with a small gain of two points at 6,467 over its previous close.
TCS was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, rising over 3 per cent, followed by L&T, Bharti AIrtel, HCL Tech, Tata Steel, Bajaj Auto and Reliance Industries. NSE Nifty rallied 164.70 points to its fresh closing peak of 16,529.10.

The Sensex closed with gains of 202.33 points or 1.87% at 11,014.97 above the 11000 level.
The Sensex had slipped below 9900 level in the initial trade but bounced back to close at 10,215.37 up 129.46 points.

The markets closed in the positive terrain after witnessing choppy session during the day. The Sensex closed at 11,572.20 up 40 points.
